5 Tips for Designing Your Dream Kitchen On Any Budget

What makes a “dream kitchen”? The reality is that it might be one thing for you and another thing for me, but all dream kitchens have something in common. They feel special. Even if the actual style isn’t to your taste exactly, you can just feel that this kitchen is a cut above. Maybe you think dream kitchens are luxury kitchens, while that might be true in many cases, it’s not always true. We’ve all seen gaudy expensive kitchens! Maybe you’re thinking it has to be designed by a professional interior designer, again, that may be true sometimes but it’s not always the case.

I would argue a dream kitchen is a beautiful kitchen AND a functional kitchen. After all, the kitchen is one of the most used rooms in the home, it needs to be functional for everyday life. What makes the dream kitchen special is that it is functional and designed equally well. These two things can be achieved on any budget, albeit different ways.

So as you plan your kitchen remodel, how do you ensure you get your dream kitchen in the end? Here are 5 ways to make sure it happens no matter what your new kitchen remodel budget is!

How to Design a Dream Kitchen

1. Design it How You Use It

A great kitchen is one that functions incredibly well. The appliances are in the right spot, the space between the island and the sink is the perfect amount. The design is in the detail! Everyone uses their kitchen differently, so your ergonomic kitchen will look different than mine. As you plan your kitchen renovation, take time to think through what functions well in your current kitchen and what doesn’t. Map out the areas you use most and think about what’s missing. It’s also important to think about your lifestyle. For example if you have little kids, having glass fronts on your kitchen cabinets might not be the best choice. If you love wine, then designating space for a wine fridge or wine rack makes sense, if you hate wine than obviously it doesn’t. If you have teenagers, then pantry space is going to be top priority (where else are all those bags of chips going to go!), if you’re empty nesters than you can get by with less storage. Think about how you will use your kitchen and then create the design around it.

2. Find a Style

There’s no question that style and design is key for a dream kitchen. As you plan your kitchen remodel, this might be the hardest part. What design style do you like? What inspires you and what are your priorities in design? This is where it can be helpful to consult with or work with an interior designer. They will be able to help you take all your beautiful ideas and put them into an actual kitchen layout and design. I love using Pinterest to keep all my ideas and inspirations in one pretty spot.

It’s also important to think about the style and age of your home. You don’t have to feel tied to the age of your home, but it should factor in. If you have a mid-century rancher a shabby chic kitchen might seem out of place, even if you do love the style. Try and stay in line with what will work well with the rest of your home.

3. Strategize & Organize

From drawers and cupboards to shelves and pantries, kitchen organization has come A LONG way. There are so many options for every type of storage (and budget). Take some time to research your options and ask your cabinet supplier what they recommend. Appliances and gadgets have also come on leaps and bounds and depending on your budget, you can find some amazing options.

4. Invest in Quality Where You Can

Custom and quality typically means expensive, but it doesn’t always have to be if you are willing to put in a bit of elbow grease.

Dream kitchens usually have a custom element. So whatever your budget is, try and find at least one thing that is handmade or different. Maybe it’s custom open shelving, mosaic backsplash or corner cabinet, just something to give your dream kitchen that luxe feel. We know most people can’t do a full custom kitchen, but finding a few areas where you can will really elevate the look.

Equally, where you can, invest in high quality finishes. IKEA cabinets turn from cheap to chic by simply choosing a high quality cabinet knob or pull. Choosing a high-end appliances will instantly make your kitchen and feel more expensive than it is (even if they are second hand!). This will vary depending on your budget, but high quality finishes instantly transform a kitchen.

5. Maximize Natural Light

Natural light is the cheapest way to get a luxe look! Maximize your windows and build your kitchen around the light. Light Makes everything look brighter and more beautiful. If you’re space is dark with not many windows, try skylights which are often affordable and will bring a ton of light to your space. One of the top backsplash trends for this year is window backsplashes, which is a great way to bring the light in without losing much needed space.
